3. Toiletries

Mr. Zhao forgets to pack slippers, a toothbrush, and toothpaste on a business trip and calls the hotel front desk to have them delivered to his room.

Mr. Zhao Forgets Some Things

Mr. Zhao forgot to bring some things on his business trip. It was only after he arrived at the hotel that he realized he had no slippers, toothbrush, or toothpaste. He was a bit worried, so he picked up the phone and called the front desk.

The person on the other end of the line said, “Hello, what can I help you with?” Mr. Zhao said, “Hello, I’d like some slippers.” The front desk asked him, “May I ask how many pairs you’d like?” Mr. Zhao said he was staying alone, so one pair would be enough.

The front desk asked him again, “May I ask if you need anything else?” Mr. Zhao thought about it and said he had forgotten to bring a toothbrush and didn’t have toothpaste either, so he also needed a toothbrush and toothpaste. The front desk wrote down everything he needed.

The front desk said, “No problem, we’ll send it to you right away.” Mr. Zhao thanked her, hung up the phone, and felt that the hotel’s service was really fast — he could get what he needed without even having to leave the room.

A few minutes later, the staff delivered the slippers, toothbrush, and toothpaste to his room. Mr. Zhao was very satisfied. He thought that in the future, when traveling for business, even if he forgot to bring something, he wouldn’t need to worry too much.

Room Service Requests in Chinese Hotels

Most hotels in China provide slippers (拖鞋), a toothbrush (牙刷), and toothpaste (牙膏) upon request if guests forget to bring their own, usually delivered directly to the room within minutes at no extra charge. Calling the front desk with 喂 (wéi), the standard phone greeting, and using 请问 (qǐngwèn) to politely ask questions are common courtesies in these service calls.
