Miss Wu books a single room at a Shanghai hotel for a business trip, learns about the required deposit, and pays with her China UnionPay card.

Miss Wu at the Shanghai Hotel
Miss Wu needs to go to Shanghai for a business trip. She booked a single room online, planning to stay for three nights.
When she arrived at the hotel, the staff told her the room was already booked, but she also needed to add a deposit. The deposit plus the room fee came to 2,000 US dollars in total. Miss Wu thought the deposit was a bit expensive, but she had no choice and could only pay.
She asked the staff whether she could use a UnionPay card, and the staff said she could. Miss Wu was very happy, because she hadn’t brought much cash — she had only brought one UnionPay card and a little American money.
The staff swiped her UnionPay card with the machine, and then gave her the room key card. Miss Wu took the key card, took the elevator, and went to her own room. The room wasn’t big, but it was very clean, and she felt very satisfied.
Three days later, Miss Wu was going to check out. She thought that if she came to Shanghai again for business in the future, she would stay at this hotel again, because the service here was very good, and paying with a UnionPay card was also very convenient.

Paying with UnionPay in China
银联卡 (yínliánkǎ), issued by China UnionPay, is the most widely accepted bank card network across mainland China, including in hotels, restaurants, and shops. Many hotels require a refundable deposit (押金, yājīn) at check-in to cover potential damages or extra charges, which is typically returned at check-out if the room and minibar are undamaged.
