Miss Wang’s Day at the Hilton Hotel

Miss Wang works at the Hilton hotel in New York. She is very busy every day, but she also really likes her job.

Her job is to welcome guests, help them with their luggage, and then take them to their rooms. She says that doing this job lets her meet many different people.

Today, an American guest arrived at the hotel. He could speak a little Chinese, and Miss Wang was so happy that she spoke to him in Chinese.

Miss Wang asked him, “Is this your first time coming to New York? Are you here on business or for travel?” The guest said this was his first time here—he wasn’t here for business, he was here to have fun. He also said he wanted to visit many places and take a look around.

Miss Wang told him that New York has many fun places, such as parks, museums, and shops, and that he would definitely like them. She said, “The lobby is up ahead, please follow me, I’ll first help you take your luggage to the room.” The guest was very grateful to her and felt that this hotel’s service was truly excellent—he wanted to stay here again in the future.

Hotel Hospitality in China

In Chinese hospitality culture, hotel staff often use 您 (nín), the polite form of “you,” when addressing guests. Greetings such as 欢迎 (huānyíng, “welcome”) and offers of help with luggage are common ways staff show respect and attentiveness, especially toward first-time visitors to a city.
