ID Check at the Internet Café

Xiao Ming is a university student who lives next to the school. His computer broke, so he decided to go to an internet café to get online. He had never been to an internet café before, so he was a little nervous. His friend told him that internet cafés have many rules, such as needing to show a passport or ID card before you can go online.

On Saturday afternoon, Xiao Ming walked into the internet café. Inside there were many computers, and many people were online. Some people were playing games, some were watching movies, and others were working. The attendant saw Xiao Ming and said to him, “Hello, welcome. Do you want to go online?” Xiao Ming said, “Yes, I’d like to go online for three hours.”

The attendant said, “All right, please let me see your ID card — this is our regulation.” Xiao Ming was a little worried because he had forgotten to bring his ID card and only had his passport. He asked the attendant, “Is a passport okay?” The attendant thought for a moment and said, “A passport works too, no problem.” Xiao Ming breathed a sigh of relief and handed his passport to the attendant.

The attendant registered Xiao Ming’s name, then told him how much the internet fee was. Three hours of internet cost fifteen yuan, and Xiao Ming could pay with cash or top up his account. Xiao Ming chose to pay with cash because he thought it was simpler. The attendant gave him a seat number, and Xiao Ming walked to his seat and started going online. He felt that the café’s computers were very fast and the network was very good.

Three hours later, Xiao Ming’s time was up. He stood up, ready to head home. He felt that this internet café experience had been quite good — although he had been a little nervous at first, the attendant had been friendly and patient. Xiao Ming thought that if his computer broke again in the future, he would come back to this internet café. As he walked out, he felt happy in his heart, because he had learned the café’s rules and now knew to remember to bring his ID card next time.

Internet Cafés in China

网吧 (wǎngbā), or internet cafés, require every customer to show a valid government ID — a passport for foreigners or a national ID card (身份证) for Chinese citizens — before going online. This real-name registration rule is a nationwide regulation intended to track internet access for public security purposes, and staff are required to enforce it strictly regardless of how busy the café is.
