A sudden tornado strikes on a summer afternoon, transforming a clear sky into a scene of destruction.

Tornado Warning
That afternoon, the originally clear and boundless sky was suddenly devoured by ink. The weather station’s alarm screamed through the silence. Standing on the observation tower, I witnessed the first crack tearing open from the clear horizon. Just ten minutes ago, it was still a clear summer day, but now it was overcast with thick clouds pressing down like lead.
Then, thunder and lightning tore open the silence of the sky. Lightning slithered like silver snakes across the overcast sky, each flash making the earth tremble. A violent wind arose, whipping up sand and broken branches, blowing road signs askew. I gripped the railing, watching the funnel cloud slowly take shape amid the thunder and lightning. Another gust of violent wind shook even the glass windows of the observation tower.
A torrential rain poured down without warning, raindrops hitting the ground like bullets. In the downpour, the tornado finally touched down, a black column of wind spinning and devouring everything. I heard the crisp sound of trees snapping, piercingly loud in the symphony of thunder, lightning, and violent wind. When the torrential rain finally turned to drizzle, the overcast sky split open, revealing a long-lost clear sky. But I knew that the scars of this storm would be forever etched into this land, just like that momentary clear sky.

(Tornado) in China
Tornadoes are relatively rare in China compared to the United States, but they do occur, especially in the eastern plains. The Chinese word for tornado is 龙卷风 (lóng juǎn fēng), literally ‘dragon whirlwind’, reflecting the traditional belief that dragons control weather phenomena. Tornado warnings are issued by the China Meteorological Administration, and people are advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings.
