First Day

0

A freshman on his first day at university feels nervous and excited as he navigates required courses, credits, and a new academic environment, ultimately choosing to follow his passion.

First Day

The sunlight of the first day filtered through the sycamore leaves onto the campus. I clutched my schedule, my palms slightly sweaty. The gates of the academic hall had just opened. I had chosen three core courses in my major, each requiring extremely high academic commitment. The professor said at the opening ceremony that we need to complete 160 credits in four years, with required courses taking up most of them. This made me both excited and nervous.

My major is theoretical physics, and my schedule is filled with required courses like quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. In the first class, the teaching assistant handed out a thick stack of reading materials, saying this is the academic foundation for the semester. I flipped through the table of contents and found that each course requires completing an independent research project, and every credit carries heavy thinking. My roommate complained that there are too many required courses, but I feel these courses can help me build a complete knowledge framework.

At the afternoon elective course introduction session, I unexpectedly discovered a course on philosophy of science. Although it is not a required course, the professor said it can provide a new perspective for professional study. I hesitated about whether to add it, because it would increase six credits. In the end, I decided to follow my inner academic passion and added this course to my schedule. When I walked out of the teaching building, the setting sun stretched my shadow long. I knew that the confusion and choices of this first day were the most genuine academic initiation of university life.

Chinese University Credit System

In Chinese universities, students are required to complete a certain number of credits (学分) to graduate, typically around 160 for a four-year program. The curriculum includes required courses (必修课) and elective courses (选修课). Required courses are mandatory for the major, while electives allow students to explore other interests. The credit system is similar to that in many Western countries but with a strong emphasis on core academic subjects.
