I just want to sleep

An overworked friend skips proper meals and only wants to sleep, until a friend’s phone call and advice help him start taking better care of himself.

Taking Good Care of Yourself

Xiao Hua has been very busy with work lately, and he’s tired every day. He often doesn’t get off work until very late, and he doesn’t eat properly when he gets home either. This morning he only drank a cup of coffee, and at noon he only ate a sandwich. At seven in the evening, his friend Xiao Li called him and asked if he wanted to go out together.

On the phone, Xiao Li said, “We’re going dancing in a bit, do you want to come?” Xiao Hua thought about it and felt that he was really too tired — he had no energy left at all. He said to Xiao Li, “Thanks for inviting me, but right now I just want to sleep, I don’t want to go dancing.” Hearing this, Xiao Li was a little worried and asked if he was sick.

Xiao Hua said, “I’m not sick, it’s just that I’ve had too much work recently and a lot of pressure.” Hearing this, Xiao Li said to him, “You should take good care of yourself. Don’t just eat a sandwich every day — you should also drink more water and go to sleep earlier.” Xiao Hua felt that Xiao Li was right, and he decided to change his lifestyle habits starting today.

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Hua first went to the kitchen and made himself something simple but tasty. As he ate, he rested, and he felt much more comfortable than before. After finishing his meal, he put his phone aside, turned off the light, and lay down on the bed. He thought, “Today was really too tiring. I won’t think about anything — I’ll just have a good sleep.”

The next morning, when Xiao Hua got up, he felt much more energetic. He thought about what Xiao Li had said the night before and felt that a friend’s concern really matters. From now on, no matter how busy work gets, he’ll remember to eat properly and rest properly, instead of just getting through the days on coffee and sandwiches. He decided that at night he also shouldn’t only think about work — occasionally he should go out dancing and relax with friends too.

Work Fatigue and Self-Care in China

Long working hours and skipped meals are common complaints among office workers in Chinese cities, sometimes summarized by the phrase 996 (working 9am–9pm, six days a week). Friends checking in on each other’s eating and sleeping habits, as in this story, reflects a common form of care in close friendships, even when it means turning down a fun invitation like 跳舞 (tiào wǔ, “to dance”).
