Wedding Anniversary

A couple celebrates their wedding anniversary at a five‑star hotel. When the restaurant is full, the concierge arranges a special turndown service instead.

Turndown Service

Mr. Wang and his wife came to Shanghai today because today is their wedding anniversary.

They have already been married for two years, so Mr. Wang wanted to give his wife a special evening.

They are staying at a five‑star hotel. This hotel is near the city center, and around it there are many famous restaurants.

Mr. Wang asked his wife what she wanted to eat. His wife said she likes French food because French food is more romantic. They decided to go to a French restaurant for dinner in the evening.

In the afternoon at six o’clock, Mr. Wang went to the concierge and asked a staff member to help them reserve a restaurant. The staff member was very polite, but the restaurant was already fully booked. Mr. Wang was a little disappointed and didn’t know what to do.

When the staff member heard that today was their wedding anniversary, he immediately congratulated them. He said that although the restaurant had no seats, the hotel could prepare a special turndown service.

They could first rest in their room, and then let the hotel prepare fresh flowers, chocolate, and drinks. Mr. Wang asked whether five o’clock was convenient, and his wife happily said, “Sure!”

In the evening at five o’clock, the attendant came to their room and made the room look very beautiful. There were many flowers on the bed, and on the table there was a special cake. Mr. Wang’s wife was very happy; she felt this was more convenient than going to a restaurant and also very romantic.

While eating the cake, they talked about the first time they met. Although this time they did not have dinner at a French restaurant, they still properly celebrated their wedding anniversary.

They thanked the concierge staff and decided that in the future every year they would travel together. For them, the most important thing was not which restaurant to go to, but that the two of them were together.

(suī rán … dàn shì …) “although … but …”

This pattern expresses contrast: “although X, but Y.” In spoken Chinese, 但是 is often kept even though English would drop “but.”

(yì biān … yì biān …) “while … while …”

Used to describe two actions happening at the same time: “while doing X, (also) doing Y.”

好好 emphasizes doing something “properly” or “in a good way.” 一下 softens the action, like “a bit” or “for a while.” Together: “celebrate properly (for a bit).”

Turndown Service in Chinese Hotels

In many mid‑ to high‑end hotels in China, 夜床服务 (yè chuáng fú wù, “turndown service”) is offered in the late afternoon or early evening. Staff may tidy the room, draw the curtains, turn down the bed, and leave small gifts such as flowers, chocolates, or fruit. For special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays, hotels often add extra decorations or a cake, similar to the story above.
