Xiao Li reads a news report about an AI deepfake scam, learns what “deepfake” really means from a friend, and warns her coworkers to stay alert during video calls.

Xiao Li and the Deepfake
Xiao Li works at a small company. Every day she has to attend many video conferences, and she often watches the news. Last week, she saw a very strange news report: a company was scammed out of a lot of money. The scammers used a new technology that made the boss look like he was really in a meeting, but actually those people were all fake. After reading it, Xiao Li felt very scared, because she also often attends video conferences.
Later, Xiao Li chatted with a friend, wanting to better understand this matter. Her friend told her that kind of technology is called “deepfake.” Deepfake can use old photos and videos to generate a new fake video. It looks just like the real thing, so it’s hard to notice a problem. Xiao Li asked her friend, “If scammers want to scam our company, what should we do?” Her friend said the best way is to ask more questions — for example, asking the other person to do an action live, or calling to confirm.
Xiao Li decided to tell her coworkers about this. She posted that news in the company group chat and wrote, “Everyone be careful — if someone in a video conference asks you to transfer money, you must call to confirm in advance.” After reading it, the coworkers all felt very nervous, because many people had never thought about this problem before. The manager also took this matter seriously and decided to give everyone a class, teaching them how to identify fake news and fake videos.
In that class, the teacher said that AI is getting more and more powerful, and the videos it generates are also becoming more and more realistic. Many people ended up losing a lot of money because they believed fake videos or fake news. The teacher suggested that when everyone sees strange news, they should look for reports from other media to confirm it, and not just believe a single source. If you have a misunderstanding about the meaning of a word, you should also ask more and learn more, instead of guessing randomly on your own.
From then on, Xiao Li became even more careful. Every time she attends a video conference, if she notices anything strange, she calls the other person in advance to confirm. She also often reminds her friends and family to watch out for fake news online. She thinks that although technology keeps advancing, as long as everyone has a bit more understanding and a bit more caution, they can protect themselves and avoid being scammed.

越来越 (yuè lái yuè) — “more and more”
越来越 sits before an adjective or verb to show that a quality or state keeps increasing over time.
现在AI越来越厉害。
技术越来越先进。
把 (bǎ) — moving the object before the verb
把 takes the object of a verb and places it before the verb, to emphasize what happens to that object. It’s common with verbs like 告诉, 放, and 给.
小李决定把这件事告诉同事。
请把你的报道发给我。
打电话确认一下 (dǎ diànhuà quèrèn yíxià) — “give them a call to confirm.” A common, practical phrase for checking that a request in a video call or message is really from the person it claims to be from, rather than a scammer.
AI Deepfake Scams in the News
Reports of “deepfake” (深度伪造) video-call scams have become a recurring topic in Chinese-language news, including a widely reported case in Hong Kong where a finance employee was tricked into transferring a large sum after joining a video call where every other participant, including the “CFO,” was AI-generated. Chinese media often distinguish 换脸 (face swap) as one specific technique within the broader category of 深度伪造. Companies increasingly train staff to verify unusual requests — especially ones asking for money — through a second channel, like a phone call, rather than trusting a video call alone.
