Two coworkers get hungry after work, try a busy new restaurant, wait for a table, and enjoy a pleasant dinner.

A Pleasant Dinner
Xiaoming and Xiaomei had worked all day. At seven in the evening, they felt very hungry, so they wanted to go out for dinner. Xiaomei said, “I heard a new restaurant just opened downstairs, and the food is delicious. Let’s go take a look.” Xiaoming said, “Sure, I want to try it too.” So they happily walked out of the office and went to the restaurant together.
When they got to the entrance, Xiaoming looked inside — there were so many people! The waiter came over and asked, “Hello, do you two have a reservation?” Xiaoming said, “Sorry, we haven’t made a reservation.” The waiter said, “I’m really sorry, the restaurant is full right now — it might be about a half-hour wait.” Xiaomei was a little disappointed, but she still said, “That’s fine, we can wait.”
The waiter told them, “You can go sit at the café next door for a while and have a cup of tea. I’ll come get you when there’s a table.” Xiaoming and Xiaomei thought this was a good idea, so they went to the café to rest for a while. While drinking tea, they chatted about what happened at the company today, and time passed quickly.
About twenty-five minutes later, the waiter called to tell them a table was ready. Xiaoming and Xiaomei went back to the restaurant right away, and the waiter led them to a table by the window, where they could see the park outside — the view was beautiful. Xiaomei said happily, “This table is really nice, thank you!”
After sitting down, they ordered several dishes — fish, meat, and a vegetable dish. The food came out quickly, and it tasted really good. Xiaoming said, “Next time we should come a little earlier, so we won’t have to wait so long.” Xiaomei said with a smile, “It’s fine, waiting is fun too, because we get to chat more.” After finishing dinner, they were in a good mood and walked home together.

Waiting for a Table in China
In busy Chinese cities, popular restaurants are often 满座 (mǎnzuò, fully booked) during peak meal times, especially around noon and in the evening. Rather than a formal waitlist book, staff frequently take a phone number or offer to text or call when a table opens up, and many restaurants have a bar or lounge area, like the one in this story, where waiting guests can order a drink while they wait.
