Email Storm

Manager Lin learns a lesson about email etiquette after a CC and BCC mishap leads to an awkward conversation with a client.

Email Storm

Manager Lin stared at the computer screen, his finger hovering over the send button. He had just finished writing a harsh complaint letter, with the recipient being Director Zhang from the partner company. He hesitated for a moment, added Director Zhang’s assistant to the CC field, and after some thought, quietly put the company’s vice president in the BCC field. He checked the attachment, confirmed the data report was correct, and then clicked send.

Three days later, Director Zhang called. His tone was unusually polite: ‘Manager Lin, I received your email. The CC list was very thorough; even our vice president received the BCC version. ‘ Lin’s heart tightened, knowing the BCC had been exposed. On the phone, Zhang’s voice was still gentle, but every word was like a nail: ‘If the sender doesn’t even trust the recipient, why bother writing the letter? ‘

Lin hung up and reopened the email. He deleted all CC and BCC, leaving only Director Zhang as the recipient. He rewrote the message with sincere wording and replaced the attachment with a more detailed proposal. This time, he checked the sender information three times before solemnly pressing send. A week later, Director Zhang proactively called back, his tone carrying a smile: ‘Now this is how business should be done. ‘

Email Etiquette in Chinese Business

In Chinese business culture, email communication often involves careful consideration of CC and BCC fields. CCing superiors or relevant parties is common to keep everyone informed, but BCC can be seen as sneaky or distrustful if discovered. Direct and sincere communication is valued, and using BCC may damage relationships. The story illustrates the importance of transparency and trust in professional correspondence.
